What “perpetual” means here, exactly
Your licence is for Backstop 1, and it does not expire. Every 1.x release is included — fixes, improvements, and whatever macOS breaks next. If you buy today and we ship 1.7 in two years, you get 1.7.
When Backstop 2 eventually arrives it will be a paid upgrade, at a fraction of the full price, and buying it will be optional. Backstop 1 will keep working and keep restoring.
We would rather say that plainly than imply “one payment, forever, for all future versions” and then quietly discover in three years that nobody can afford to keep maintaining it. Software that is abandoned because its funding model never worked is worse for you than software that asks again.
What happens when the trial ends
New backups stop. Restoring does not. It never will, in any version, under any circumstances — including if you never buy a licence at all.
Holding someone's files hostage to a payment would make "you can always get your data back" a marketing line rather than a fact, and the whole product rests on it being a fact.
Refunds
Ask, within 60 days, for any reason or none. There is no form. A backup product you are unsure about is a backup product you will not trust, and an untrusted backup is worse than no backup because you will stop checking it.
